DIY: Easter Basket

By Katy Sommerfeld

The breezy springtime air is flowing through the trees, flowers are blooming and bees are buzzing, and little rabbits are hopping along, happy to feel the warmth of their tiny fluffy tales. It’s the Easter season, which means the Easter Bunny is coming soon! Instead of buying baskets for your kids and for home directions this year, why not make your own? There are so many ways you can spruce up a basic basket to be something truly incredible that will impress your kids, family, and any guests that may be visiting for Easter lunch.

Follow these instructions to make a super cute kid’s Easter Bunny basket:

  • Apple basket
  • White, pink, and black acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes - one sponge brush, and 2 fine brushes
  • Long white pipe cleaners
  • Fluffy white pom-poms
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  1. First, paint your apple basket white using the acrylic paint and sponge brush. Let the first coat dry - if the paint didn’t cover the entire basket, give it a second coat.
  2. Once totally dry, use the black paint and a fine paintbrush to paint eyes on your basket. You can make these look however you want, but if you aren’t very artistic, a simple shut-eye design is easy and looks very cute.
  3. Use the pink paint and a fine paintbrush to paint the rabbit’s nose and mouth.
  4. Take two long white pipe cleaners and bend each into a rabbit’s ear shape. Using the hot glue gun, glue the ears onto the inside of the basket, aligning them with where you drew your rabbit’s face.
  5. Use the hot glue gun to glue a white pom-pom to the backside of the basket to give your Easter Bunny a big, fluffy tail.

Once the glue is dry, you’ll have a super cute basket for your kids to use at an Easter egg hunt! Fill up the basket with candies and toys for Easter morning if desired.

Easter shouldn’t be just for the kids! You can also make a super cute Easter basket to use in your home as a decorative container or you can use it as a gift basket to a friend.

Follow these instructions to make a classy Easter basket any grown-up will approve of:

  • Medium-sized basket with a handle, like an apple basket
  • Roll of ribbon in a color of your choice
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • White Easter “grass” or white tissue paper
  • Some adult treats - wine, chocolates, candles, soaps, succulents, etc.

  1. Tie the ribbon into a bow around your basket. Use hot glue to keep the bow secured to the basket.
  2. Fill the basket with white Easter “grass” or with white tissue paper.
  3. Add as many treats as you want to the basket. Get creative and add your friend’s favorite candies, wine, nail polish, etc.

That’s all there is to it! This simple DIY looks super classy and can be used as a gift basket or as an Easter decoration in your home. Instead of spending money on a cookie-cutter Easter basket, make your own and personalize it so that it fits your home decor and style.
