Digital8 video recording tapes were introduced to the world in 1999. Digital 8 was the final progression of the 8mm Sony Handycam era, and part of the first wave of digital technology. Video8 tapes were analog. Hi8 tapes offered improved resolution. Digital8 retained the same physical cassette as its predecessors, but the format in which video was encoded and stored on the tape itself is the entirely digital format. I guess looks can be deceiving. Also deceiving? Digital formats that were stored on magnetic tape. Yes, Digital 8 it has the word “digital” in it, but that doesn’t mean the format was safe for long term storage. Digital-8 tapes degrade just as fast as anything else stored on tape. Which means they are waving bye-bye as we speak. It’s like your Uncle Jeff, the terrible driver.
