Seriously Spooky Halloween DIY Costumes

Spooky season is here! Which means it’s time to put together a frighteningly good costume for all your office parties, trick-or-treating, and fall events.

If you want a unique DIY costume, check out these spooky options below.
Most of them require only a few accessories that are easy to find at any craft or thrift store.

Gauze-y Ghost

Instead of using a white sheet or fabric for a ghost costume, use some creepy translucent gauze to drape around your head and body. Dress in all black underneath and put black paint around your eyes for an extra eerie effect. This outfit is really simple and easy for children too!

The Exorcist

Honor this classic 1970s horror movie by dressing up like the possessed girl. If you want to make this a couples costume, have your partner dress up like the priest! The costume is fairly simple to make. You just need a messy dark red wig, nightgown, and face paint to add some bloody scratches on your cheeks.

Cruella

Since the new movie came out this summer, a Cruella costume will be trendy for Halloween. You have the option to make the costume either cute or spooky depending on your style. Once you have the classic black and white wig, you can wear all black or a red dress. Add a mask for the masquerade scene or a bunch of smoky eye shadow and dirtied cheeks for Cruella’s not-so-perfect moments in the film.

Glow-in-the-Dark Skeleton

This costume is so much fun to make! You can even plan a craft night out of this DIY project if you and your friends want to do a group costume. The more skeletons the scarier! The glow-in-the-dark feature is also fun at nighttime or during a dance party. First, find an all-black shirt and pants you’re willing to paint over. Second, purchase glow-in-the-dark fabric paint to make the drawn bones pop out. If you want to make the outfit look good in the daytime, consider putting a layer of white fabric paint on first and adding the glow-in-the-dark layer on top. Lastly, outline and paint the bones and reference a skeleton diagram for accuracy.

Voodoo Doll

A one-of-a-kind voodoo doll costume will stand out as a creative and creepy outfit at any Halloween party! You can go for a cuter look by wearing a dress, or keep it simple with tan-colored clothes. You’ll paint, stitch, or glue a big red heart in the middle of your chest and then paint black “stitch lines” around your neck and joints. Finalize the costume by adding stitch marks on your cheeks with face paint and black lipstick for a dramatic effect.
