Fashion works in cycles. Partly because tastes change, and partly because every generation draws on aesthetic inspiration from past generations, fads come and go. Grandpa Simpson said it best, “I used to be with it. Then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I’m with isn’t 'it,' and what’s 'it' feels weird and scary.” So, here are the new and scary “it” things that might not be quite so new. Don’t worry though! Just like Grandpa Simpson promises, someday the cool thing will change, and a bunch of people will be left in the fashion dust. Until, of course, those
fads come back around again. I’m still wondering when my grandpa’s armpit pants will be haute couture again. What a time that’ll be. Without further ado, here are the
classic trends that used to be “it” and are making a comeback:
1. CHOKER NECKLACES
Chokers were the de-facto neck accoutrement in the
90s, and everyone wore them. Even Jared Leto. Now they’re making a comeback, though men are still a little slow to jump on the bandwagon.
2. SWEATPANTS
The athleisure movement has made sweatpants cool again. Even though they’re a bit more slim fitting than in the past, joggers are still just sweatpants with a different cut. Comfort’s back, baby!
3. RIPPED DENIM
This one makes a comeback every 5-10 years it seems. In the 80s, every pair of jeans had the knees blown out, and now things are swinging back in that direction. Who doesn’t like a little breeze on your skin when you’re wearing long pants?
4. CUT-OFF JEAN SHORTS
Taking an old pair of jeans, slicing them off above the knee, and calling them shorts is one of the most economical things you can do. The problem was that, for a while, it was totally uncool. But they’re making a comeback. Be still my tattered leg openings.
5. WIDE LEG PANTS
Whether flared or just billowy, more generously proportioned legs are on the uptick. Personally, I feel like once you go skinny, you can never go wide, but that’s just me. I guess I’m just not able to keep up with the times.
6. PLAID
Long live grunge. The iconic early 90s
style is making a comeback in bold plaids. Both guys and gals can get into this one, and you get extra points if the plaid is flannel. Apparently the muted and minimalist tones of grays, browns, and taupes are being tossed to the wayside for loud colors and fun prints. I wouldn’t dust off that neon pink Lisa Frank t-shirt just yet, but give it time. Maybe it’ll happen.
8. LONG, STRAIGHT HAIR
Apparently, Cher Chic is back on the menu for 2017. Going long and shiny is all the rage with Hollywood stars, so it’s only a matter of time until it trickles down to everyone else. For dudes, it looks like the man bun of yesteryear is on the way out, but the
haircut du jour hasn’t manifested itself yet. The dream of a Billy Ray Cyrus mullet resurgence still lives! So, there you have it. Those are the biggest fashion trends from days past that we see rearing their heads in modern attire.
