When it comes to travel, coming up with ideas about where to go can be hard. That’s where we come in. We’re going across the country finding some of the coolest places to stay in each geographical region. A couple of weeks ago, we told you the best places to visit in the Southeast. Today, we’re going up North.

These are our top 5 places to visit in the Northeast.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK

The concrete jungle where dreams are made of, New York should honestly just be the capital of America. It’s the largest city by population in the United States, it’s home to some of the best restaurants in the world, endless shopping, and tons of historical landmarks. Central Park is one of the more unique features of a major city anywhere in the world, and everyone should see the Statue of Liberty before they die. Just watch the crosswalks. New York drivers are crazy!

PORTLAND, MAIN

This small town in our northernmost state (excluding Alaska) is a charming coastal city with tons of personality. Home to tons of microbreweries and surprisingly good food, Portland has great surprises around every corner. Go Kayaking in the Atlantic, then tour any of the 6 lighthouses that are within 20 minutes from downtown. Also, if you’re looking for some of the best seafood on the planet, this is your place.

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

This industrial city has been experiencing a significant renaissance in the past decade. Once known primarily for its steel — their football team is called the Steelers, after all — Pittsburgh has revitalized its image to make it more appealing to the 2000s. It hosts all sorts of great events on the river like Red Bull Flugtag, and it has great art exhibits like the Andy Warhol museum. Put Pittsburgh in your travel plans. You won’t regret it.

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS

A tiny college town in Northwest Massachusetts probably shouldn’t count as a city, but we’re going to sneak it in anyway. This charming village is home to Williams College, an ivy league school whose mascot is the purple cows. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, this town features rolling hills, a great college-town nightlife, and surprisingly good shopping. The Appalachian Trail passes close by, so if you want to do some hiking, it’s only a couple of minutes away.

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT

New Haven is another college town, but it’s much larger than Williamstown. Beaches, delicious seafood, and lighthouses make this mid-sized city truly special. Take a tour of Yale, one of the best colleges in the world, then check out their art and natural history exhibits. When you’re tired of getting educated, relax at Silver Sands State Park.

So, that’s it! That’s our list of top 5 cities in the Northeast to visit this summer. We would note that, unless you like being buried under snow, we do recommend you visit these places in the summer
