In 1985, Sony introduced the Handycam, and everybody with tired arms lifted them one more time to applaud. The Video8 analog video/audio format helped make video cameras smaller and more functional than the bulky VHS and Betamax recorders that had held court until then. Hi8 was an upgrade to the analog format by virtue of making provision for digital audio. The “8” references the 8mm video tape (Betamax tapes were 12mm) and the “hi” references to the higher quality in a breezy good-to-meet-you sort of way.

Do you have any Hi-8 tapes? About the size of a deck of playing cards, they are half an inch thick, 2 ½ inches wide, and just under 4 inches tall.
